Learn to Dance the Carolina Shag!
The Hilton Head Island Carolina Shag Club teaches beginner shag lessons. Classes meet on Friday evenings during Friday Night Dances and started in September. Classes meet at Christ Lutheran Church – Heinrichs Hall, 829 William Hilton Parkway, HHI 29929. Lessons start at 5:30pm and there is a $8 floor fee. Lessons are open to couples, singles and anyone who loves to dance. Club annual dues of $40 entitle members to free lessons that can be repeated throughout the year.

Hilton Head Island Carolina Shag Club 2024 Schedule of classes:
NEW CLASSES START on January 5, 2024
Basic I – 5:30 to 6:00
Basic II & SPECIAL STEP Class – 5:30 to 6:00
There will be open dancing until 9:00 after the last class. This is time for individuals and couples to practice steps and receive personal coaching from instructors. Lessons are taught by various members and guests. Instructors are available after class to assist members with steps.
Membership year is from June 1 to May 31 each year. The Club takes a break from lessons during the summer and resumes after Labor Day.
SHAG CLASSES SUMMARY:
BASIC I
Teaches the basic steps that will allow you to dance the Carolina Shag for the rest of your life and be a “shagger.” The steps you learn will be a part of almost every routine or mirror step you learn in the future. It is very important to learn these steps correctly because they are the foundation of Shag.
BASIC II & Special Step
Teaches additional steps to add to your dancing enjoyment. The steps and combinations you learn will make you a better shagger, prepare you for more combination steps and allow you to create your own routines.
LINE DANCE LESSONS!
On selected Friday nights before the Social Dance, Leigh Lawrence teaches Line Dances popular with Shaggers. Please check the weekly newsletter for more information.
