Shag Lessons
Learn to Dance the Carolina Shag!
The Hilton Head Island Carolina Shag Club teaches Basic 1, Basic 2, and Special Step dance lessons on Friday nights from September through April. Shag step classes meet on Friday evenings at 5:30 pm at Christ Lutheran Church in Heinrichs Hall (829 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island, SC). All members are entitled to receive unlimited free lessons but must pay the Friday night entrance fee.
YOU MUST BE A MEMBER TO TAKE LESSONS.
NEW MEMBERS MAY JOIN ON LESSON NIGHT – PLEASE ARRIVE AT LEAST 15 MINUTES EARLY TO REGISTER.
There will be open dancing until 9:00 after the last class. This is a great time for individuals and couples to practice their newly learned steps.

SHAG CLASSES SUMMARY
BASIC I
Basic 1 teaches the basic steps the basic steps that will allow you to dance the Carolina Shag and be a “shagger.” The steps you learn will be a part of almost every routine or mirror step you learn in the future. It is very important to learn these steps correctly because they are the foundation of Shag.
If you’ve never taken Shag lessons, we recommend that you begin with Basic 1-Lesson 1. This will provide you with a better learning experience and you’ll have more fun as you learn the state dance of South Carolina! Dancers are encouraged to take this class until they feel comfortable moving to the next level.
BASIC II & Special Step
Basic 2 teaches additional steps to add to your dancing enjoyment. The steps you learn will make you a better shagger, prepare you for future combination steps and allow you to create your own routines.
Special Step teaches a variety of combination and more advanced steps to enhance your dancing abilities
LINE DANCE LESSONS
The Club provides a great opportunity to learn popular line dances. This class is usually taught on the first Friday of each month at 5 p.m.
LESSON VIDEOS
Our videos demonstrate the basic steps and proceed to show other advanced steps. This is a great way to reinforce what you have learned in our classes and pick up other steps in Shag.
